California mission style burritos can be found at any of the four Neato Burrito locations in Central Pennsylvania. Today's visit led Betty to the New Cumberland site, just below Checkered Past in the old downtown firehouse on Fourth Street.
I was a bit overwhelmed when I started reading all of the choices on the wall. I initially went to the wrong end of the counter, not realizing until I looked up and saw the big pointing hand cutout hanging from the ceiling. Silly me. Once at the correct end of the counter, my friendly burrito slinger smilingly asked if it was my first time and then gently guided me through the process. Guess he could tell poor old Betty was a novice at this type of thing. There were at least eight different kinds of tortillas to choose from that day. I'll be honest - I didn't even know that that many types existed. I chose to go with the Burrito-of-the-Day, but of course, in typical Betty style, I had to make some modifications. The handsome young man with the piercing and tattoo was so easy-going; he gave me whatever I asked for, just like a good man should. Really, I feel this kind of treatment is something that should happen more of the time! I was feeling spoiled. It occurred to me that this was like the Subway of burritos only non-corporate and certainly more neat-o. My burrito was stuffed, grilled, and wrapped in foil by the time I paid for my meal. That entire burrito, stuffed with brown rice, black beans, two types of salsa, sour cream, chicken, lettuce, shredded cheese and cucumbers only ran me $6.85 including my refreshing glass of water (good for you, you know). As I looked behind me there were at least a dozen businessmen in their crisply-ironed shirts and pin-striped suits just waiting to order burritos of their very own. I had hit this place at precisely the perfect time! There are a mixture of booths and tables in this narrow restaurant and I found myself selecting one of the booths near a window. I admired the decor as I devoured my tasty lunch. The restaurant has a unique, eclectic charm with quirky art scattered about. Above my booth was an enormous buffalo head hanging on the wall, as if quietly keeping watch over the happy restaurant patrons. Kind of ironic, considering you can order your burrito with buffalo meat. But Betty loves interesting wildlife; it's not just the servers and patrons that make Neato Burrito a real feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. I look forward to sampling more of their variety. Got a great cheap lunch? Call me: 234-MODE x207. |
